At the SKINSCAR Clinic, we provide liposuction surgery that helps you get rid of stubborn, excess fat. Like most treatments, it’s perfectly safe, but isn’t for everyone. It’s therefore important you read our guide on this page carefully before deciding to have liposuction.

What is liposuction?

Our liposuction surgery involves removing fat by sucking it out through a tube and is most effective for people who are neither too far above or below their ideal weight. It also helps if you have elastic, firm skin. It’s vital to remember, however, that liposuction is no substitute for losing weight, and shouldn’t be undertaken if that is your goal.

Why would someone have liposuction?

When you have areas of the body that are difficult to shift weight from, liposuction can be a great solution. This includes areas such as:

  • Tummy
  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • Thighs
  • Neck
  • Knees
  • Upper arms

We also use liposuction to remove lipomas and fatty swellings that sometimes develop under men’s nipples.

If I book surgery with you, what happens?

If you decide to book liposuction at the SKINSCAR Clinic, we’ll first meet with you to discuss the surgery and find out what you’d like. We’ll ask what illnesses you currently have or have had previously and take a record of any medication you might be on.

We’ll then examine you and take copies of your medical records (don’t worry - we’ll ask you to sign a consent form). It’s also important that you have someone with you during the examination, purely to offer support.

Our surgeon will take note of your weight and height to make sure it’s safe to carry out the operation. We may suggest delaying the operation if you’re planning on becoming pregnant or are overweight.

How do you perform liposuction?

We use a thin tube called a ‘cannula’, which is inserted into tiny cuts in your skin. Liposuction isn’t painful, but you might experience some mild discomfort.

The cannula’s job is to loosen the fat and make the part of your body we’re treating a nicer shape. That enables us to attach a suction device to the cannula which sucks the fat from your body. Once done, we sew up the small cuts in your skin.

The suction device isn’t always required; sometimes we can use a simple syringe if the area being treated is small. We may even turn to ultrasound-assisted lipectomy, where waves are used to help disrupt the fat cells and make them easier to remove.

What should I do before liposuction?

To help your liposuction surgery be a success, we simply ask that you keep your weight steady with a good diet (we can advise you on this). If you smoke, we also ask that you stop at least 6 weeks before the operation, to reduce the risk of complications.

There’s no need to worry about removing hair from the area we need to treat, but we advise our patients to have a bath or shower within 24 hours leading up to the operation to ensure the area is as clean as possible.

You should also avoid using anti-inflammatory drugs for two weeks prior to your operation. Anaemic patients should also take iron tablets, and if you’re on the contraceptive pill, we may ask you to stop taking it.
