What is a skin tag and why might you want it removed?

10 April 2024

Skin tags are extremely common growths that affect the outer layer of the skin. These soft skin growths may be small and harmless, but their appearance makes them unwanted additions for most patients. In this blog post, we delve deeper into skin tags, their cause and what’s involved in skin tag removal.

Do I have a skin tag?

Skin tags are soft, small and often flesh coloured, but can be darker in appearance. They form across many parts of the body, but are more commonly found in areas where the skin rubs together, including on the neck, under the arms or breasts, and around the eyes.

As well as differing in appearance, they also vary in size, ranging from 2mm up to 5cm. They can form in groups or as single growths. Whatever the size, appearance or concentration of your skin tags, they should be harmless and painless.

While official research hasn’t been undertaken, it is thought that more than half of the population have skin tags.

How do they differ from warts and moles?

Skin tags differ in appearance from warts and moles. In comparison, warts are firmer and rougher, while moles are flatter and round or oval in shape. Unlike warts and moles, the cause of skin tags is not fully understood, with the human papillomavirus (HPV), metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance all thought to be contributing factors.

Why might you want your skin tags removed?

As skin tags are harmless and painless, their treatment and/or removal is classed as a cosmetic procedure.

Many people with skin tags seek removal due to their unsightly appearance. Alternatively, they may be exploring their removal options due to the discomfort they experience as a result of their skin tags. Skin tags on the legs for instance are prone to damage, bleeding and scarring due to shaving. Larger skin tags may also protrude through clothing causing social discomfort.
